What I Wore to the Hamptons

I went to the Hamptons recently for the first time and had the time of my life. A friend of ours invited us to their place for the weekend. We were celebrating Erin’s birthday, who you met in my last blog about my new favorite Thai restaurant. If you haven’t read about Pinto Garden you can do so here.

Before we even dive into the clothes, I have a gift for you! I want to let you know you can get $30 off your first order or unlimited membership at Rent the Runway here.

I didn’t really experience the Hamptons properly as we mostly spent time at a friend’s place, so I won’t go into activities there by all means. However, I did want to chat about some of my favorite summer finds! I will eventually do a proper blog post about why I love Rent the Runway too because it has absolutely changed my life in regard to fashion and how I dress.

I went with easy summer dresses for this trip. Not too many accessories or anything because the weekend was oppressively hot. I don’t know about you, but when the temperature rises I just want the easy options. Not even jewelry for the most part because that makes me feel even hotter. I think I did jewelry once the whole weekend. Just breathable dresses, sandals, a hat if I’m out in the sun and some sunnies if it’s too bright. Plus, an easy bag with lots of room for all my things like sunscreen, face sunscreen, bottle of water, Chapstick and definitely a book because I never go anywhere without a book. It also has to be able to handle some weight as I only read hardback. Really just various summer essentials to keep me as happy as possibly when I’m grumpy on the inside. I just hate the heat. I’ll take snow any day over hot!

Anyway, I’m going to go over my outfits for the weekend and I’m including links to any pieces that are still available to either rent or purchase.

On day one I chose a Tome dress via Rent the Runway that I just loved the stripes. I’ve had this extra obsession lately with stripes. Somehow as I get older I seem to dig stripes more and more, like I think they’re more sophisticated or something. No idea why! I bought a South Beach Swimsuits hat for the weekend from Asos, which ended up being one of my favorite recent purchases. I believe I spent about $20 (so cheap!) and I feel like it somehow goes with everything. I’ve worn it multiple times a week since. Then there was these ADORABLE silver and yellow sandals from Zara. They’ve been my new summer go to when I want to dress up an outfit as of late. I’ve been pretty over heels since moving to New York because I seem to do some much more walking between locations, so pretty flats, sandals, boots, etc. have been my jam.

I definitely went swimming every day, which meant pulling out my tried and true favorite swimsuit from Modcloth. I’ve had this baby for ages now. I actually rarely buy new swimsuits because I’m not terribly in love with swimming. Sadly, I’m one of those insecure girls who doesn’t like being in a swimsuit. I’m forever working on that! Regardless, I think this piece is a pretty good option for girls that are a bit insecure in that department. It hugs you in the right places and is modest. It’s so popular on Modcloth that they have continually sold it for years and they have it in a bunch of colors. You can purchase here. I paired this suit with a PatBo kimono, which I soooo wish I could afford to own. I have been foaming at the mouth every time I see Rent the Runway add a new PatBo piece because their patterns are just to die for. They make the prettiest things and I think Brazilian designers are under represented in the industry. I also bough a sun hat from Asos for poolside stuff. This was so cute, but such a pain in the ass to get to The Hamptons on public transport. It was too big to fit in my tiny weekend suitcase and I tried folding it to no avail. So, I had to wear a giant hat on the subway and then transfer to a train wearing it. If you’ve ridden the NYC subway and know how busy it is at 6pm you’ll understand the reciprocating anger from myself and everyone around me from the problems this creates. I added a Topshop basket bag with pom poms (I think this has been such a cute trend) and some Juicy Couture sunnies I bought ages ago.  I was actually 21 when I bought them, so these babies have lasted over a decade. The Topshop bag is super cute, but alas the black is no longer available. The colorful one is though! The bag itself is pretty sturdy, but the poms come off pretty easily as they’re only tied on. If you buy I would definitely recommend securing them a little better. I’ve lost a few already because I didn’t bother, even though I knew well and good they were coming off. It’s really no matter though as the bag is still cute without them. You can find a link to the bag here, although I would recommend waiting to see if it goes on sale. I waited to buy mine until the price dropped to $20.

On day two I opted for a more classic summer look with a gingham dress by Draper James. I have rented multiple pieces from Reese Witherspoon’s line from Rent the Runway and have really liked the fit on all of them. If I want something go to and classic or a piece with southern charm, then this is the line to go to. Reese does a really great job of creating pieces that look great on all body types. She recently even did a collaboration with Eloquii on a plus size line and the pieces are adorable. I feel like a lot of plus size collections get less cute, like they think bigger girls need to dress differently, which upsets me. I don’t feel that way at all about that collaboration. However, the capsule collection does run smaller than the typical Draper James stuff. I would suggest sizing up. I wore this with my Topshop bag again, some Guess by Marciano earrings (also bought over a decade ago), a ring from my mom and some Asos espadrilles. These are amazingly comfortable AND are a wide fit: perfect for my fat feet! They’re sold out of the two pack I bought, but you can purchase the silver and apricot set here $18!

On my last day I went with a ML Monique Lhuillier dress from RTR with some Asos shoes. The dress was definitely the winner here. It was so flowy (especially pretty when you’re walking). However, it’s really long! I’m 5’8”, which is fairly tall, and I was tripping over it all day. I wore it all the way home on the train and then subway from the Hamptons and almost took a nose dive a few times. If you actually bought this piece I would suggest hemming, but if you’re renting I would advise against it if you need to walk a lot in a day.

Ha ha! Yeah, I couldn’t afford it either. I have an RTR unlimited membership instead, so I just continually have new rentals. 🙂
