When I was chatting to someone a few months ago, of whom I will not mention their name, they were quite aghast when I said Dave and I were getting anniversary photos done. They asked me why and I told them because we’re a family. Evidently because I didn’t have children it was strange to document another year in the life. And of course, I was like FUCK THAT and will always be like FUCK THAT. So rude.
The point is that just because you don’t have children does not mean you don’t have the right to celebrate another cycle around the sun. Personally, I want to never stop getting anniversary photos done, regardless of children. I doubt we’ll ever decide that’s something we want, so we’ll do what this woman also told me was the “vain” thing and get our pictures taken. *insert eye roll*
Anniversaries are a special occasion to begin with, but I’ve sort of made them into an event. I’ve decided each year one of us will get to pick the destination without any questions asked from the other. Not that either of us would argue, but no assisting in decision-making is allowed. It’s purely where you most want to go that year. I chose Slovenia for our first anniversary and Dave chose Charleston, South Carolina for year two.
I am bound and determined to make these annual pictures more than just a backlit portrait session in matching sweaters. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but if we’re having these photos taken every year in somewhere new I want them to be special. Last year we took our own photos in Triglav National Park and it was a mistake to do it by ourselves. We ended up with one nice photo. I set up the camera on a tripod and neglected to bring a trigger, so it was a lot of running back and forth blindly. My eyes were bugging me on that trip, so no contacts. However, I didn’t want glasses in the photo. It was a funny attempt at some nice photos. We decided that just because we’re photographers does not mean we should be taking our own photos. So, this year I wanted something special.
I spent so much time looking for a photographer. I scoured the internet and asked all the people I know in the area. I found lots of wedding and engagement photographers doing the typical cheerful things, which is really beautiful, but we wanted to do something quirky. FINALLY, I found Taylor Jarvis of Pale Girl Photo on Instagram using the hashtag #charlestonphotographer. Even that wasn’t easy. It took a lot of looking! I am so happy I found her because I am in love with our photos. Taylor was so nice and easy to work with and even picked us up! She also found some beautiful places for photos and she has such a creative eye. This is coming from two photographers who can’t help but be critical because, well, we’re photographers. I so highly recommend her if you’re ever looking for someone in Charleston.
I also want to chat about how much I loved my outfit. As most of you know I’m pretty obsessed with Rent the Runway. They have so many evening gowns and I’m always wishing to have a reason to wear them when it hit me: anniversary photos! That’s the perfect excuse to princess! I wore this amazing Monique Lhuillier gown, which might have been a tad too low cut, but I look cute, right? I paired it with a family heirloom (my great grandma’s necklace) and earrings from my wedding day, which I don’t think you can see anyway. And, of course, Dave is in head to toe Zara because that’s 90% of his wardrobe. You have to appreciate a man who knows what he likes.
Yet another reason RTR unlimited is AMAZING! If you’re interested in trying out an unlimited membership or even a single rental I have a discount code here.
