I LOVE to play dress up. I can confidently say I’ve been playing dress up now for 30+ years. Achievement unlocked!
However, I have to admit that it’s been many years since I had a proper playtime set-up. I mean, I have a closet and all, but I haven’t had a vanity in my adult life or fun storage. I think the best time for make believe in my life to date was from the ages of maybe 3-6. I can’t remember my exact age, but in this span of years I received the ultimate gift. There’s some space under some built in cabinets in my mother’s dining room. A little nook meant for storage. There aren’t any doors, just open space. I’m not sure if it was that way before or if my parents created it. One day I got the best surprise ever. It was a pink vanity, positioned perfectly in the nook. In one fell swoop I got a vanity AND the perfect space to play pretend. It was a dream, short-lived as I quickly grew too tall for my little slice of heaven. I’ve been chasing that dream ever since. As an adult, I think that moment will come when I am rich enough to have a home with a closet room and a grown-up vanity with all the fixings. Maybe someday!
*special thanks to my Dad for taking this adorable photo and to my Mom for digging it up!
Despite not having reached my closet and vanity goals, that hasn’t stopped me from my love for dress-up. I never say no to a theme party and I dress according to all occasions. I can’t tell you how many times friends have made comments like, “did you wear pink because the restaurant is pink?” Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t. You’re just jealous you didn’t think to do it, too.
Welp, I’m still going strong with this need to dress-up, and a little thing called Rent the Runway has just made it worse. (If you have yet to jump on board, here’s a discount on your first rental.) All the sudden, I had access to all sort of clothes. I mean, before RTR, I never had access to gowns galore! At first, I felt shy about renting them because I had no need to wear a gown. I longed for an invite to an event that a gown would be appropriate, but that was unlikely. I mean, we’re not in an income bracket or social circle where people would be inviting us to anything even cocktail appropriate, let along black tie. Hmph. However, I could use my new supply of dresses for Halloween! That’s something! Oh, and maybe we could get extra fancy for date night sometimes if we’re going somewhere really nice. Or just because, perhaps? Or maybe I could dress down my gowns and layer with them and get creative. You know what? Fuck it! I will wear them whenever I goddamn please! Gained confidence to wear gowns for no reason: another achievement unlocked!
I remember the first time I rented a gown from RTR just to wear. I did my makeup, attempting a chignon (failed, but whatevs) and threw on my gown. It felt strange to run around my home all dolled up for no reason. I tried to avoid the spots around the house where dog hair tends to cluster. I shouldn’t have picked a black dress! My house is never clean. (Shut up, it’s hard with three dogs!) I was nervous to where a designer gown around the house, like wearing it casually would ruin it or something. After I got over that hump though, it was just fun. Dave was like, “are we going somewhere I don’t know about?” Nope honey, just living my best life.
Well, now I have a blog and I have even more reason to dress-up, because maybe someone else can enjoy it now, too. All I want to know is who here like to do this as much as I do? Send me links please to your random acts of princessing or whatever! Where are my people at???
