Most of the things I do on vacation are carefully curated bucket list checks. Ya’ll know about my extensive bucket list and how obsessive I am with it. This was not one of them. This was a suggestion from friends because all I really wanted to do was pet kangaroos and this experience DELIVERED.
Symbio Wildlife Park is one of those Sydney experiences that needs to be added to your bucket list. It’s a small wildlife park with a moderate number of animals, but what you get in exchange (rather than at a zoo) is a more intimate experience. The education shows are small and intimate and offer opportunities to get up close and personal with the animals. And if you have something extra in your budget for the day, you can pay for close encounter experiences with animals like red pandas, meerkats and koalas. Plus, if you’re really a baller, you can volunteer and play zookeeper for the day and get to meet all the animals up close. Pretty neat, right? If you’re like me and vacationing on a budget, you can spend a few dollars on feed and make a b line for the fields of kangaroos. You heard me correctly. They’re just roaming with you in an enclosure and they’re soooo sweet. They’re such gentle souls. Between a kangaroo sanctuary we visited in Coober Pedy and hanging with them at Symbio, they’re my new favorite animals. They’re just the sweetest and give so much love!
There you have it! If your goal in Australia is to get up close and personal with wildlife, this is where you need to be. Pro tip: go close to opening on a weekday. We got the park nearly to ourselves aside from a few other people and a school group. I’ve never been to a zoo with so few people there. It was really neat. We got front row at all the shows because fuck the kids, these ass holes want to see some pythons!
